Brief project description

The ELFIN project – ELectroactive gripper For mIcro-object maNipulation concerns the development of new electroactive surfaces and soft microgrippers for the controlled manipulation of micro-objects. The activity combines theoretical modelling, multiscale contact mechanics, micro/nanofabrication, and experimental validation of functionalized surfaces capable of modulating adhesion and friction through electroadhesion. The reference application case is the controlled grasping and release of microparticles, with particular attention to pollen grains, which are characterized by complex, multiscale surface morphologies. The project therefore aims to provide scientific and technological foundations for intelligent tribological interfaces, with potential applications in micromanipulation, artificial pollination, precision microassembly, biomedical applications, and soft microrobotics.

Purpose

The general aim of the project is to develop scientific and technological criteria for designing intelligent surfaces capable of controlling adhesive and tribological properties at the interface in real time. In particular, ELFIN seeks to overcome the limitations of conventional micromanipulation techniques, in which surface forces make both the pickup and the controlled release of micro-objects challenging. To this end, the project combines electroactive surfaces, compliant materials, micro/nanostructured architectures, and advanced contact mechanics models, with the objective of modulating the work of adhesion through electrical actuation. The project also has an application-oriented objective related to the manipulation of pollen particles, with a view to supporting the development of technologies for artificial pollination and, more generally, devices for precision micromanipulation.

Expected results

The expected results included defining the functional specifications of the devices and performance indicators; developing theoretical and numerical models to describe multiscale adhesive contact between rough surfaces and microparticles; optimizing electrode architecture and microgripper geometry; fabricating electroadhesive surfaces with planar and hierarchical configurations; and functionally and tribologically characterizing them. The project also envisaged the development of experimental demonstrators and a comparison between model-predicted performance and measured performance. Finally, the dissemination of results was planned through scientific publications, the project website, dedicated communication channels, participation in conferences, and dissemination activities aimed at both the scientific community and stakeholders and the general public.

Achieved results

The project achieved its main planned objectives, progressing from the conceptual definition through to the implementation and validation of scientific and technological results. Theoretical and numerical models were developed to describe electroadhesive contact and the dynamics of particle gripping and release; the geometric and functional configurations of the microgrippers were optimised; and electroadhesive surfaces with planar and hierarchical architectures were fabricated. From a scientific perspective, ELFIN advanced understanding of the contact mechanics of soft polymer interfaces, with particular attention to the combined role of electroadhesion, friction, viscoelasticity, roughness and micro-pad thickness. From a technological perspective, the project led to the definition of electroadhesive architectures, predictive models, microgripper geometries, fabricated surfaces and proof-of-concept demonstrators. Scientific and public dissemination activities were also carried out through publications in international journals, conference contributions, the project website, social media channels and public engagement initiatives.

A brief summary of the project:

The project addressed the absence of standardized calibration procedures for Blade Tip Timing (BTT) measurement systems used to monitor turbine engine blade vibrations. BTT is essential for preventing engine failure but lacks the metrological maturity needed for certification purposes. The consortium developed an innovative test bench based on kinematic inversion (rigid rotating blades with vibrating sensor support) targeting reference uncertainties of ~0.001 mm in amplitude and

Purpose of the project:

The project's main goal was to develop a metrologically based methodology for calibrating Blade Tip Timing Measurement Systems through the creation of a traceable testbed based on kinematic inversion, the definition of a complete uncertainty model, and the execution of experimental campaigns on various sensor technologies. The final goal is to support the metrological maturation of BTTMS systems to make them suitable for supporting the certification of conventional and next generation turbomachinery (including hydrogen-powered engines), and to set the basis for future international guidelines and standards.

Expected results:

The project was expected to develop a complete and traceable test bench for the calibration of Blade Tip Timing Measurement Systems (BTTMS), providing a solid experimental and metrological basis for future calibration procedures and pre-normative guidelines. Within this framework, the POLIBA operational unit was mainly expected to contribute through the development, realization and testing of magnetoresistive sensors, which represented a key sensing technology investigated within the project. Specific attention was therefore devoted to the validation of calibration procedures involving magnetoresistive probes and to the assessment of their applicability to Blade Tip Timing measurements. In addition, the POLIBA operational unit was expected to support the dissemination activities of the project through the creation and management of the public project website, ensuring visibility of the project objectives, progress and results.

Achieved results:

The project resulted in the design, construction, and operation of the BTTMS calibration test bench, with a significant contribution from the POLIBA operational unit, which exceeded the scope of activities initially planned. Besides the development and testing of magnetoresistive sensors, POLIBA designed and realized the main experimental infrastructure (rotating disk, mechanical assembly, and motor control system) needed to reproduce controlled operating conditions. The test bench became the main infrastructure for the experimental activities of the project, and the trials were performed at POLIBA with the involvement of all operational units. Particular attention in the activities made by POLIBA was devoted to the calibration and testing of magnetoresistive sensors, for which POLIBA and UNIPG carried out dedicated experimental campaigns to evaluate their suitability for Blade Tip Timing measurement. POLIBA also designed and managed the public project website for the communication of the project goals, progress, and outcomes. Overall, the POLIBA operational unit provided a substantial contribution to the experimental implementation of the project, the validation of magnetoresistive sensing solutions, and the development of future BTTMS calibration procedures.

Description

HELLO (Social, sustainable and inclusive Health care systems in Med area) is a project co-funded by the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, aimed at promoting more equitable access to healthcare services and strengthening the resilience of health systems across the Mediterranean area.

Coordinated by the University Hospital Consortium Corporation Polyclinic of Bari and implemented together with partners from Italy, Spain, Lebanon and Jordan, the project brings together hospitals, universities and civil society organisations to respond in a concrete way to the challenges that still limit access to care in many territories, especially for the most vulnerable communities.

At the core of the initiative is the transfer and integration of the HELIS Infarct.NET telecardiology platform, which has already been developed and validated at the European level through the Interreg PHASE project (funded under the Interreg IPA CBC Italy-Albania-Montenegro 2014–2020). Programme), within two reference hospital hubs in Lebanon and Jordan. These hubs will be connected to mobile medical units in order to extend healthcare also services to remote and fragile areas.

Alongside the strengthening of telemedicine services, SALAM promotes training activities for healthcare professionals and caregivers, awareness-raising and community engagement initiatives. A central pillar of the project is represented by applied research and open innovation actions, structured within a Transnational Research Center that will serve as the methodological framework of the entire project. Within this collaborative environment, partner universities will work together to carry out research driven by the real healthcare needs emerging from the two hospital hubs. In this context, the Polytechnic di Bari will actively contribute to the design of innovative biomedical solutions, with a specific focus on the development of flexible, user-friendly, low-cost, and sustainable bio-devices, ensuring their accessibility and effective deployment in low-resource and vulnerable settings. This approach will foster cross-border knowledge exchange and co-development processes, in line with Open Innovation principles.

Overall, the project seeks to contribute to reducing inequalities in access to care and to supporting more inclusive, integrated and people-centered modelli di assistenza sanitaria.

The Osmose project is an EU-funded H2020 project responding to the call for a ‘Demonstration of system integration with smart transmission grid and storage technologies with increasing share of renewables’.
The project aims to develop flexibilities that can be used for better integration of RES. The chosen approach is global, as it considers at the same time the increased need for flexibilities in the system (mainly improved balancing of supply and demand in electricity markets, provision of existing and future system services, and enabling dynamic control of electricity flows) and the sources of flexibilities (RES, demand-response, grid, and new storage systems). The selected global approach addresses all system requirements to capture the synergies offered by the different solutions in order to avoid stand-alone solutions that might be less efficient in terms of overall performance. For example, a storage operator plans to install batteries in order to provide balancing services. By locating the solution in a network-constrained area, the operator could at the same time contribute to congestion management and thereby also reduce costs for society.
