THE MASTER’S DEGREES OF POLIBA | INTERUNIVERSITY DEGREE WITH UNISALENTO
Master’s Degree Programme in Engineering for the Safety of Critical Industrial and Civil Infrastructures
Overview
The Degree Course is jointly delivered by the Polytechnic University of Bari and the University of Salento, with two curricula taught in Italian at the Bari campus (1 – Civil and Industrial Construction; 2 - Safety of Infrastructures and Heritage Structures) and two curricula taught in English at the Lecce campus (1 – Civil Infrastructures; 2 – Industrial Engineering System).
The course is part of the initiatives of the project funded by the MUR “Territorial Pact of the Apulian University System – Territorial Pact for Higher Education for Enterprises”.
To be admitted, applicants must hold a degree or a three-year university diploma, or another qualification obtained abroad and deemed suitable. Admission to Master’s Degree programmes is subject to the possession of curricular requirements and to the adequacy of the applicant’s scientific, technical and language preparation. The programme’s academic regulations specify the assessment methods, including with reference to knowledge of the English language.

Educational Objectives
The educational project is structured as follows: in the first year the programme includes courses, predominantly core subjects, that provide the fundamental knowledge in Safety Engineering (mechanics of materials and structures, industrial plant safety, thermal plant safety and fire safety, regulatory and legal aspects, risk management, computer science and AI, protection and securing of heritage assets).
In the second year core and related subjects are included that allow in-depth study of structural safety, electrical networks and energy infrastructures, and techniques for securing heritage assets. Teaching is strongly focused on laboratory-based learning, and several subjects include design and experimentation activities.
Lectures are delivered in person, but will also be streamed and recorded. This makes it possible to attend classes in person, remotely in synchronous mode and remotely in asynchronous mode, or in a blended format. The programme belongs to the Master’s Degree class in Safety Engineering (LM 26).

Skills and curricula
The student is provided with a solid preparation in the fields of risk analysis, assessment and prevention, and is able to design and manage traditional and innovative interventions for the safety of infrastructures and constructions, ranging from the industrial sector (plants and production and storage systems in the energy field) to the civil sector (bridges, viaducts, water networks, complex structures). Ultimately, the Master’s graduate is able to apply the “safety – sustainability” combination while interacting effectively with all the professional figures involved.
ACTIVE CURRICULA
- Civil and Industrial Constructions: defines a professional profile, the engineer for the safety of civil and industrial structures, with a solid preparation in the fields of risk analysis, assessment and prevention in construction, under the banner of the “safety and sustainability” combination.
- Architectural Heritage Constructions: trains a safety engineer with a solid multidisciplinary background, capable of intervening in all phases of project design, implementation of interventions and management of the architectural heritage.
EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES
Professional opportunities
By effectively integrating skills in the fields of civil and industrial engineering, the graduate can carry out a wide range of activities in the field of safety engineering within companies operating in the design and/or management of civil and industrial infrastructures.
- professional firms and engineering companies specialising in industrial and territorial design;
- public administrations and local authorities managing infrastructures, structures and critical systems;
- research centres dealing with these topics.
Graduates may register, subject to passing the relevant State examination, in all sections of the Register of Engineers (civil and environmental; industrial; information): this is an opportunity guaranteed only by the Master’s Degree LM-26. In addition, they may hold all safety-related roles and responsibilities provided for by current legislation.

Subsequent Training
Any continuation of the study programme may take place within the programmes of PhD programmes. In this regard, it should be noted that the PhD programme in “Engineering for the Sustainability and Safety of Civil and Industrial Constructions” is offered within the same academic pathway, in consortium with the Polytechnic University of Bari, the University of Salento and the CNR. In addition, graduates may acquire further training and specialisation through second-level Master’s programmes or Short Master’s programmes; in this case as well, the Polytechnic University of Bari offers a range of different courses.
