Master's Degree Course in Management Engineering of Civil Infrastructures – PoliBa

Overview

The Master's Degree Course in Management Engineering of Civil Infrastructures provided by Polytechnic University of Bari was established to meet the training demand for a professional Civil Engineer profile required to possess new skills. Today, in fact, the Civil Engineer is increasingly called upon to carry out their profession in the field of improvement and management of an existing infrastructure asset, which, having been built for the most part in the second half of the 20th century, no longer meets the requirements of safety and efficiency.

At the same time, in the context of activities concerning the provision of essential services (water, transport, etc.), following the transformation of the non-profit bodies in charge into actual economic enterprises, the Civil Engineer increasingly needs to deal not only with social criteria but also with economic ones, as well as with business logics. It should also be noted that in recent decades the traditional figure of the Civil Engineer running a private practice has been replaced by Engineering Companies, equipped with financial capacity and organizational systems, comparable to actual companies providing engineering services.

Educational Objectives

The course, lasting two years, is structured over four semesters, two for each year of the course. During the first year the programme includes the delivery of design disciplines fundamental toMaster's Civil Engineering, applied to the fields of territorial infrastructural and structural systems, specifically oriented toward the integration of technical processes and objectives with management, economic, and maintenance-related ones, while providing advanced study of the topics of management, of design e maintenance for various application areas (for example, bridges, viaducts, transport infrastructure networks, service networks) with programmes specifically designed to achieve the objectives defined for the course.

In the first two semesters, disciplines will also be delivered that provide the basic elements of a managerial, economic-estimative, and cost-benefit analysis nature, generally not present in the traditional LM-23 degree programmes.

Admission

Possession of a Bachelor's Degree or another qualification obtained abroad, recognized as suitable.

In second year further disciplines will be delivered that deepen the contents relating to managerial and technical-economic fields. Moreover, in addition to the twelve CFU of free-choice credits, further flexibility is offered within the educational pathway thanks to the possibility of choosing, from within a broad range, 12 CFU of courses that are both characteristic of the degree class and related and supplementary, thus allowing individual in-depth study, according to the student's interests, in more specific areas relating to network infrastructures or to strategic infrastructures and structures.

The last semester of the second year will be dedicated to other educational activities such as internship, laboratory, and thesis, useful on the one hand for integrating the knowledge acquired in the individual courses and on the other for introducing students to the world of work. The achievement of the first objective will be pursued in a synthesis laboratory, to be carried out in groups under the coordination of tutor lecturers, and will consist in interdisciplinary analysis of a case study, also selected under the supervision of Companies, Bodies, and Enterprises operating in the sector, with which agreement arrangements are already in place within the Polytechnic University.

The Skills

The degree course addresses the needs of ecological and digital transition, but also managerial, of public and private companies, in public Administrations and in private professional practice, to interpret, in the educational field, the changes in society and in the world of Civil Engineering. Therefore, the student will acquire skills in the fields of advanced representation of infrastructural systems (GIS, WEB-GIS, BIM, augmented reality), ICT (5G Networks, Narrowband IoT, Sigfox, LoRaWAN, Smart meters and remote sensing devices),Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, of multi-objective optimization strategies. These, combined with advanced modelling skills for civil engineering systems and the concept of “system digital twins” (Digital Twin), will enable graduates to propose increasingly efficient solutions to the complex design and management problems of our time by building decision-support systems within a multi-objective cost/benefit paradigm.

EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES

Professional opportunities

Graduates in Civil Infrastructure Management Engineering will be able to find employment and hold not only technical but also managerial and senior roles in Companies, Firms and public and private Bodies operating in the field of design, management and maintenance of major works and structural and infrastructural networks, which provide essential services related to Civil infrastructures (e.g. water, transport, etc.), in professional practices and engineering firms.
