UniCore, the Polytechnic University of Bari welcomes two refugee students

Kaleab and Rahel are refugees in Uganda and arrived in Italy through the UNHCR programme. They are enrolled in the master's degree programmes in Computer Engineering and Telecommunications

Having fled Eritrea and taken refuge in Uganda, they are now finally in Bari. Here, they will try to lay the foundations for their future, far from their homeland and from a prospect of uncertainty and danger. Gebremariam Kaleab Teame and Rahel Ghirmay Yohannes, both engineering graduates, will continue their university studies at the Polytechnic. He, 25, has enrolled in the master's degree programme in Computer Science Engineering (Computer Engineering). She, 28, has chosen Telecommunications and Internet Technologies Engineering (Telecommunications and Internet Technologies Engineering), also a master's programme, both taught in English.

The Rector, Umberto Fratino, welcomed the two new students at the Rectorate, greeting them on behalf of the Poliba community. Kaleab and Rahel arrived in Italy two weeks ago through UniCoRe (University Corridors for Refugees), a support programme for refugee university students in African territories, promoted by UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Launched in 2019, UniCoRe offers young refugees, who are often unable to continue their studies in the countries where they have found protection, the opportunity to obtain a study visa for Italy.

“You are at home here,” Rector Fratino told them, inviting them to become acquainted with the reality of the Polytechnic with the help of the staff, in particular the office for competitions and enrolments, which handles the procedures and provides great support to refugee students. According to UniCoRe, over these years of activity the programme has involved more than 300 international students, 37 Italian universities and 414 master's degree programmes. This year, the seventh edition of the initiative, a total of 33 students from various countries have already arrived in Italy. https://universitycorridors.unhcr.it/
