Atomic scale, an essential basis for new technologies, functional materials and advanced engineering
51st Congress of the Physical Chemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society. Scientific activity in seven major thematic areas. Among the topics explored: advanced materials, nanosciences, energy, environmental protection, water resources, water quality with AQP
14 July 2026
From 7 to 10 July, the Polytechnic University of Bari hosted the 51st Congress of the Division of Physical Chemistry of the Italian Chemical Society.

The event, promoted by the Italian Chemical Society, was jointly organized by the University of Bari Aldo Moro, the National Research Council and the Polytechnic University of Bari (contacts: Prof. Gian Paolo Suranna, Roberto Grisorio, DICATECh).
The congress brought together about 200 participants from universities, research institutions and Italian and international scientific organizations, with a particularly significant presence of young female and male researchers. For four days, the spaces of the Polytechnic University of Bari became a place of discussion on the most advanced topics in Physical Chemistry and their connections with fundamental research, technological innovation and the major challenges of sustainability.
Scientific activities covered seven major thematic areas: fundamental physical chemistry, structure, dynamics and spectroscopy; theory, modelling and data-driven approaches; soft matter, interfaces and complex systems; physical chemistry for health and life sciences; electrochemistry, catalysis and energy conversion; materials and nanoscience for sustainable technologies; environmental physical chemistry.
Particular emphasis was placed on the topics of advanced materials and nanosciences, energy conversion and storage, electrochemistry and catalysis, environmental protection and water resources, as well as computational modeling, machine learning and data-driven approaches. In these fields, understanding phenomena at the atomic and molecular scale constitutes an essential basis for the design of new technologies, functional materials and advanced engineering solutions.
A significant connection with the territory was provided by the presentation by Acquedotto Pugliese S.p.A., dedicated to the quality of potable water and the digitalization of the Water Safety Plan. The contribution showed how digital tools, geographic information systems, hydraulic models and monitoring data can be integrated to strengthen risk management and the safety of water supply, offering a concrete example of dialogue between scientific research, technological innovation and the management of strategic infrastructure.
More information about the event is available on the official Congress website.
