The “iTNT-NS” laboratory, from Poliba the future of Telecommunications

RESTART – Wheel 2. Workshop and presentation, Wednesday, October 8, at 10:00 a.m. Center of excellence, it is unique in Southern Italy. The laboratory is dedicated to the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks

October 6, 2025

The results achieved by Spoke 2 (coordinator Polytechnic University of Bari) of the national RESTART program “RESearch and innovation on future telecommunications systems and networks, to make Italy smarter” (2023-2025) will be presented at Poliba Wednesday, 8 October, 10:00 a.m., in a dedicated workshopBridging the Future through Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks and Services.

The event is scheduled to take place at the “Spazio Oplà” of the Polytechnic, on the university campus.

RESTART, as will be recalled, is the most important public research and development program ever carried out in Italy in the telecommunications sector. Funded by the European Union with 116 million euros, within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), it includes 8 Spokes.

A flagship of the research work carried out by Poliba, within its Spoke 2, is the experimental laboratory “iTNT-NS” (Integrated Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks and Services Lab).

2.5 million euros. The laboratory, launched in 2023, at the beginning of the national RESTART program, with an investment of 2.5 million euros, today represents a center of excellence unique in Southern Italy and among the few in Europe focused on the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial telecommunications networks.

Features. Equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including a satellite channel emulator, high-performance workstations, network infrastructures, drones with a dedicated hangar, anechoic chamber, antennas, programmable devices and hardware for T/NT systems, the laboratory qualifies Bari as a strategic hub for research toward 6G.

Presentation. The heart of the workshop will be the presentation of the new laboratory, “iTNT-NS” combined with several demonstrations of the activities, including Emulation of integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, Internet of Drones & 5G and Beyond.

The Poliba laboratory consolidates Bari as a strategic hub for research toward 6G, intended to ensure connectivity through the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. This technological evolution will enable services and applications such as coverage of remote areas, management of emergency operations, environmental monitoring to prevent disasters, and advanced logistics via drones.

Prof. Luigi Alfredo Grieco of the Polytechnic University of Bari, Spoke 2 Coordinator of RESTART and PI ITA NTN

At the same time, the workshop will provide an opportunity for discussion among universities, national research centers and companies to share the results achieved by the projects of Spoke 2.

Program. Wednesday, 8 October, 10:00 a.m., “Oplà” Spaces, Campus universitario.
